Definition
Hirschsprung disease is also called congenital aganglionic megacolon. Judging from its name this disease is a state of the large intestine (colon) which has no innervation (aganglionic). So, because there are parts of the colon (from the anus towards the top) which has no innervation (ganglion), then there is "paralysis" in the colon so that bowel function menjalanakan become dilated (megacolon). The length of the colon are affected differently for each individual.

Symptom
Because of the "paralysis" of colon in carrying out its functions, the stool can not come out. Usually, the newborn will spend his first stool (meconium) within the first 24 hours. However, in infants suffering from Hirschsprung's disease, the stool will come out late or can not even get out at all. Besides the baby's stomach will also be shown bulging, accompanied by vomiting. If left longer, the baby weight will not increase and there will be growth disturbances.

Management
There are two operation steps that can be done to deal with this disease, namely:
1. The first step is to do a colostomy, the feces of making drains in the abdominal wall by making a hole in the abdominal wall and then connect the intestine (which is still healthy) to the hole. This allows spending feces through the abdominal wall.
2. The second step is the weight, age, and the baby's condition is sufficient, to do the colostomy closure and reconnect the colon into place, namely in the anus.

Additional examination
At the time checked the baby to the doctor, the doctor will insert a finger (pinkie) into the baby's anus (digital rectal). It aims to assess the anal muscle relaxation. Other additional checks that can be done is abdominal x-ray, barium enema and rectal biopsy. Abdominal X-ray aims to see if there is enlargement / widening of the colon that fill with feces or gas. Barium enema, by including a liquid radioactive substance through the anus, so that later can be seen clearly on x-ray extent to which the colon is affected by this disease. Biopsy (taking samples of colon tissue with a needle) through the anus can be demonstrated with certainty the absence of innervation of the colon. A biopsy is usually performed if the colon is affected by this disease long enough or barium enema examination are less able to describe the extent to which the colon is affected.
